They were done by a German-American painter named George Hinke (1883-1953) and were then collected in a children’s picture book titled “Jolly Old Santa Clause.” That volume offers an expose of the Santa-Industrial Complex at the North Pole the day before Christmas eve and its portrayal of long hours and dangerous working conditions is said to have inspired the creation of W.E.L.F (Working Elf Liberation Front). Down south, Hinke’s paintings have a cult following and as such the book has been reprinted numerous time. Not all of these editions are the same. In older versions Santa has his trademark pipe, but more recently that has been edited out. And of course the color saturation and brightness of the images can vary from reprint to reprint. But the books are generally produced in a slightly larger format which really shows off the paintings, so I would absolutely pick up a copy.
