What is Wing Chun?

During the early 20th century southern China faced many of the same challenges that we see today.  Urban crowding, social decay, street violence and organized crime were all serious problems.  Wing Chun was developed to be an efficient, easy to learn system of self-defense in precisely this environment.  Ip Man, perhaps the most famous practitioner of the art, perfected his skills while working as a police officer in Foshan.  After the Communist conquest of Guangdong in 1949 he fled to Hong Kong taking his art with him.  His new students, including Bruce Lee, demonstrated Wing Chun’s simplicity and effectiveness to the world, making it one of the most popular Chinese martial arts practiced today.

Authentic Wing Chun in Western New York

Blue Heron Wing Chun is the New York State branch of the Wing Chun Hall led by Sifu Jon Nielson.  It is associated with the Hong Kong Ving Tsun Athletic Association and the Ip Ching Ving Tsun Athletic Association.  We are dedicated to the pursuit of authentic Wing Chun Kung Fu as practiced by the late Grandmaster Ip Man, and his son, Grandmaster Ip Ching.

Dr. Benjamin Judkins is a direct student of Sifu Nielson and oversees all lessons and instruction at the Blue Heron Wing Chun Hall.  Click on the tabs at the top of this page to learn more about our club, the Wing Chun system, or to find additional readings and information.
